Finally....A Background!

While you guys are all stitching away on your glorious blocks (I'm loving the colours we are seeing here), it has taken me WEEKS to find the background I wanted to use for Roseville. I figured that this quilt is one I will be working on for a long time, so the background had to be one I would love all the way from the beginning to the end of this masterpiece quilt.

Finding a background with some colour and or pattern that wouldn't overpower the whole quilt yet satisfy my love of saturated colour wasn't an easy task. My first three choices were lovely, however I wasn't totally happy with any of them.....
from L to R: Kaffe Apple Spots, a French General toile and Amy Butler solid in olive

Then I remembered my all time favourite fabric from Kaffe....the gorgeous Roman Glass. This pastel Roman Glass has always called to me, however I thought it might still be a little too overpowering.
Until I turned it over to the back....there it was, the fabric I had been looking for!!
I don't think it matters to make this quilt using the back of the fabric do you? First block all drawn up ready to start appliqueing.

  1. Love the background reversed Cathy!! I think it will go with the brights. I hope you'll put your colour choice for the first block soon, dying to see it. I had a friend over today and we looked at this fabric as a background for a quilt she is about to make. That was as far as we got, then we open a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc with lunch...Cheers, Kim McLean

  2. I was fondling a little piece of that fabric today, one of my favourites and it just goes to show that we should look at the backs of them more often.

  8. I've been struggling with the same background choice. Using the back never even occured to me! That should be a fun background--it has such great colors!

  9. What a delightful choice! I would have never thought to turn the fabric over. I, too, am having a hard time coming up with a background. 9 1/2 yds. is a substantial purchase and so I have to love love love what I am buying. Thank you for showing the three backgrounds that you didn't choose, it give some much needed "scope for the imagination".
