Just a corner of the panel

Choosing the fabric is usually my favorite part of the whole quilting process but I have to say I'm not thrilled with "my" fabric choices for the squirrel panel of RA. I keep plugging along but I definitely think putting these bright colors together take a talent I haven't developed yet.
I have a lot of Amy Butler solids that I am inserting here and there. I think the solid leaf needs some embroidered veins.

I'm glad that I can see the choices everyone else is making so I can learn.

  1. I love your bird--his fabric is great! (Veins on the solid leaf are a great idea--not something I would have thought of--duh!) The fabric picking is definitely a learning experience for me...as is the stitching, marking, etc. (I am learning what I do wrong!) Keep up the lovely work--I look forward to seeing your whole panel. (I am still plugging away on mine--those panels are big!)

  2. Great bird, Robin! Pigma pens also make good leaf veins! I agree, it is very helpful seeing everyone's fabric choices!

  3. I'm with you.......learning to "see" the details in order to lend interest to the pattern shapes is the most challenging part of this quilt for me. It seems to be getting a bit easier (finally) and I am starting to enjoy myself a lot more. Michele B.

  4. What a gorgeous bird Robin! You're doing just great! You've mastered using the bits of the fabric for the bird.
If I can give a tip from my own experience, don't overthink the fabric choice. Pick the largest bird or whatever largest shape, choose the fabrics for the body - feather - tail and cut them out, then leave the pieces on the pattern sheet, then move on to the next largest piece and repeat. If you leave all the cut pieces on the pattern sheet, you'll soon see what works and what doesn't and also avoid repeat of the same colour if they are close to each other. With the panels, most of Kaffe & Amys work together because they seem to use the same dyes in the fabrics, so in the end the colours will work together.
Keep up the stitching, can we see the rest of the panel please? Cheers, Kim McL

  6. Robin, you're doing great! I'm finding it a challenge to step out of my comfort zone so on my first couple of blocks I'm choosing a couple of fabrics I really like in Kim's quilt as a starting point.

  7. If that's an example of your fabric choices, I don't think you need any help. The bird is really wonderful. Keep going, it's a winner.
