This is the Mary Mannakee quilt which I made a number of years ago. I probably enjoyed working on this one more than the formal Baltimore I did at the beginning of my quilting journey. The background is shirting fabric. I like this naive style. The pattern is available from the DAR Museum but I did change 3 blocks with the ones I've drawn up, the top left hand corner, 4th block in 2nd row and 3rd block 4th row ( reading from left to right) Loooved making this quilt. A beautiful job! You should be proud.
ReplyDeleteOh wow...it's absolutely spectacular Kim!
ReplyDeleteI just love the fabrics you've used too.
Thanks so much for sharing this. :)
Oh wow another stunning quilt, love it and I do have the pattern and a lot of the fabrics for this quilt.
ReplyDeletecheers
Christine
Kim that is 'the Baltimore' I'll make! I did an article with Jan Carlson on the quilt and the museum for McCall's magazine. We both did the bottom left block as a single block in our own style.. it was REALLY a great article and a fun project.
ReplyDeleteyour quilt is just fabulous!
What a gorgeous quilt, stunning! Thank you for sharing, Elaine
ReplyDeleteI bought this pattern back in 2005 or 2006 for $3.00 on ebay don't think it was a popular pattern back then its on my "Someday, maybe one day list" I have the background fabric chosen as a shirting fabric as well, just haven't decided what colours to use yet.
ReplyDeleteYours is beautiful Kim
Wow, what a spectacular quilt, Kim!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
It's totally gorgeous and has inspired me to think about getting back to mine although that's all I might have time for- thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteSeeing your Mary Mannakee made me start this quilt.
ReplyDeleteI am really enjoying making it and yes very inspired by yours using lots of fabrics. I will not make that center block in the original either! What I will substitute it with haven't decided yet! I probably will substitute another one too. LOVE the blocks you chose to make for your quilt as substitutes.
I really hope you do another applique quilt in reproductions soon.
Kathie
I think Mary would be a bit jealous if she saw your wonderful version. I prefer it to the original a LOT, and the border improvements are spectacular. Michele
ReplyDeleteAt some point you will need to put together a book of your quilts in chronological order, Kim. It is so interesting to see your journey, your development into a style all your own. A few years ago I might have been tempted to make the Mannakee quilt, but I saw your quilts first; now there is no going back!
ReplyDeleteStunning!
ReplyDeletecheers
Kim, It is absolutely gorgeous! I so wish I had an ounce of your applique talent!
ReplyDeleteWow--lovely!!!
ReplyDeleteThe book idea is simply genius. So, when is it going to happen?;)
ReplyDeleteThis past spring I met Nancy Kerns who also made this quilt. She did a lecture for our guild's quilt show and I got to see the quilt up close and personal. Kim, I give you so much credit for doing this!!! It's definitely a labor of love.
ReplyDeleteYours is beautiful! to be honest, I like it more than the colours used in the DAR quilt.
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for your lovely comments!
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to see the original up close. In fact one of these days I'm going to the US to see these original Baltimores in real life instead of peering into the photos in books. Wouldn't that be something to behold.
I'll try and look for the photo of the formal Baltimore I made at the very beginning of my quilting career and post. It is so different. I think I really much prefer the naive ones.
Don't know about the book idea, I've given away quite a number of quilts, applique ones too and don't have photos of them either. I'll post of what I have here though. Kim McL
Kim, I like what you have done with the MM quilt. It has more interest than the original.
ReplyDeleteMargaret
Kim, your work is absolutely beautiful, I really love the touches of the pink and yellow.
ReplyDeleteIt is so beautiful, it looks like a cheater quilt. Absolutely wonderful
ReplyDeleteKim, It is absolutely gorgeous...You do amazing work!
ReplyDeleteYou are such an inspiration, Kim! Thank you for sharing glimpses of your journey...where you started and allowing us to see how you've progressed. The naive style is exceedingly interesting to me. That's one of the things I happen to like BEST about your designs...that hint of primitive, Folk Art, Gee's Bend, Amish-ness. BRAVO!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never liked this pattern, but THIS changes my mind. I'll have to make it now. What a great choice of fabrics. I absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteFYI the Mary Mannakee quilt is on display in the DAR Museum gallery through the end of August. The museum is open M-F 9:30-4 and Sat. 9-5. We are closed federal holidays and for about a week at the end of june for the DAR's annual conference, so check at museum@dar.org to ask for exact blackout dates.
