Fourth Block

This afternoon I finished my fourth block. As I am not quite satisfied about it, I ask for your opinion. I don't like the colour combination, the orange with the bulb below is ... I don't know. I think about doing it again (I have plenty of background fabric).

  1. Well - since you asked.... my opinion is: I don't love the fabric choice for the bottom leaves - I think you'd be happier with something a little more saturated.... something with some purple in it.... Otherwise... I think your work is AMAZING! I love seeing each post! thanks for sharing!

  2. Fourth block.... what does it look like with the other three? And there are many many more blocks to go.... so why not go on to the next block and come back and look when there are ten bocks --- this is such a busy quilt, none of the blocks "stand alone".

  3. I agree with Mimi, the overall effect of these blocks, when you get them together, will be the real test. All quilts can do with a little punch of orange. It keeps them interesting. Beautiful!

  4. I agree with Mimi ... you need to compare the blocks together. What may look "bad" by itself can take on a new life and look great when placed by other blocks.

My rule of thumb when concerned about redoing a block ... make several more blocks before even considering redoing a block that you just finished. Then stick them all together on your design wall and then decide if something needs to be redone. You might find you like how it looks when in company of all the other blocks!

  6. I agree with Mimi that you can do a few more blocks and see what the overall fit for this block is. But, having said that, I really like the blossom part of the flower, and think that's what I would emphasize. I think the problem my eyes have with the block is that the white in the floral print on the leaves draws the attention away from the pretty blossom to the leaves. As you finish more blocks, the other flowers may balance that out (or not). If not, I would replace the leaves with something without the white, maybe green with a tad of purple or blue to make the orange pop. The whites and yellows always seem to draw my eye, which is great IF that's where you want the attention. But that's just my two cents worth, and things often look so different in person than on the computer (and vary even between computer screens), so 'd make a few more and see how I felt then. You're making such great progress--we will all be wanting to see them together soon!

  7. I'm with the others, wait for a few more before you rip it all out.
Can you try this for me please? if you can find a fabric in a slightly brighter pink than the flower in the leaf, bunch this fabric on the top round part of the flower and the narrow leaves above the calyx. Don't sew it on, just audition it & see how it looks. Or, try same with yellow fabric? Keep that in mind after you've done a few more blocks and see how you feel.
You're doing great Joke! Love your other blocks. Cheers, Kim McL

  8. What thoughtful advice you have acquired! I like the block a lot. I looked at it with the others and I think it will blend quite nicely. You make these seem easy; I'm inspired to try this pattern also. Stop me!

  10. Hmmm. I have to agree. Let's see this block with the others, Joke. Knowing it is one block of many, it seems a bit unfair to judge it singularly. I happen to like the orange. ; )

  11. I'm with the rest of the crowd, sometimes we can look at something too long. If you're still not happy down the track, just replace the round inner blossom part so it's got a simliar colour and value as the leaves. It might seem more balnced then.

  12. Thank you all for your support and suggestions. (I even dreamt of it, last night!) Kim and Janet, I'll keep your suggestions in mind and give it a try if , after a while, I'm still not satisfied.
