  3. Sheila, I didn't think they would run either, I am not sure if they were all strictly 'Keffe' a dark purple one ran, but all came good with the dye catching sheet

  4. Let met tell you my story about "color running" I used HAND DYED FABRICS in several places on my Roseville Album. I was spraying to get the "blue washable" marker off the long side panel, yes the long side panel. One of the hand dyed green's started to run. I didn't dab immediately LEARNED THAT WHEN YOU SPRAY OR WET AROUND A HAND DYED FABRIC, YOU BETTER DAB THE WATER OFF IMMEDIATELY.......what to do , what to do. I kept that area moist, ran and got a "color catcher" put one piece on the back of the area, and used one piece on the front. I got 99% of the running color out. Took the green circle off, cut a larger circle, appliqaued it on over the part that didn't come out. Ah success.

I learned two important lessons.... one, don't spray hand dyed fabrics and let the water soak, you must dab it off immediately.....Two, I will never ever use another blue wash out marker, never ever again. I am now using the Pilot pens that go away with heat.

Lesson learned, I hope this helps someone else

  5. Thanks for sharing that one Paula! I used the purple pen and it came back when I wet it too, I thought that they washed out! I am going the direction of the frixion pens too, apparently this ink comes back in extreme cold (freezer), I don't know where you live, but I am in Brisbane, I NEVER have to worry about the weather being THAT cold LOL. I am glad your colour run was fixable! There was NO WAY I was going to remake all these!!

  6. Oh my...I can feel your pain! Not on something with quite as much work, but I have learned that since batik fabrics have become so popular, they are using different dyes now and they run more now. I used a black batik once and it still runs when I wash it. So, I wash it alone and all is good. I didn't worry about the bleeding as all the fabrics are muted colors. Your blocks are beautiful!

  7. I love this array Kelli. We've never seen them displayed like this. I can't wait to see them put together. You are FAST.
    Thanks for the advice Paula.

    1. Hee hee Leland, I am fast, but I have a messy house! LOL
I figure when I am dead and gone, my sewing will still be here, no one will remember or care about the house, and they will have the pretty things I have made. Although, the house isn't too bad lately, solution to a messy house? Go and buy a bigger one! LOL

  8. Your blocks are just lovely and what a timely post for me.
I need to wash all my Flower Garden blocks and have been putting it off for fear of the fabric running since I didn't pre wash.
I have already had to re do the stems on about half of the blocks because I used a hand dye for the stems and it ran so bad I had to replace all the stems with another fabric.
One note about the Frixion pens and batiks. They will REMOVE the color from the batik fabric so do a test before using them on batiks and dark color fabrics.

  9. LOL... Great post, Kelli!! I do usually prewash but I think I will take a page from your book and wash my blocks with a color catcher before assembling them. I agree with you, Paula, that I don't like the blue markers. And I love the Frixion pens but was horrified to read your caveat Nancy! I discovered by experimenting that after you iron away the pen marks if you wash the piece then the mark will not reappear in the freezer. Just sharing. Back to work....

  11. Great blocks. Gives me inspiration to finish mine. I have not have as much success with Shout Color Catcher. Some reds on another quilt still ran even though the color catcher was "pink." I noticed when the blocks were dry that the background was stained only around some reds. I did reach for a laundry stain remover called Resolve and it took care of it. I also have a stained t-shirt and I did have a color catcher in the washing machine. This is a new box and I don't see an expiration date on the box, so I assume it is still good.

  12. I think I might cry if all those beautiful colors started to run and bleed. Glad you were able to fix the problem.

  13. I presoak my fabrics in a white bucket until color no longer bleeds, then I wash, so can't tell you if Kaffe dyes will run in a quilt, but can tell you that when I soak the Kaffes (and anything else darker), the water is sometimes remarkably dark with extra dye sometimes. I don't know that the dye would adhere to fabric in a quilt, but it seems it could. Fabrics that continue to bleed until my patience is gone get treated in Retayne. But I'm glad to hear the color catchers were able to save the day! I think using them with any newly finished quilt (prewashed fabric or not) is a must! (I've had prewashed fabric bleed even--reds, blacks, turquoises, which is disappointing, and the fabrics weren't cheap, but good quality.)
