Getting Started - Need Advice!

I am so excited about being part of this blog and getting started on Stars & Sprigs!  I started collecting fabric as soon as I saw Janet's first pictures of the quilt, and was thrilled to finally get my hands on the pattern last week. I have one question before I dive in, though - how do you all manage the huge pattern?  I was very surprised to see how big it is!  Does anyone cut them into more manageable pieces?  Any disadvantages to doing that?  It's nearly as big as my sewing room!

  1. Welcome, glad you joined the group!!!
Yes, I would cut them apart into the 3 sections or individually for the 8" blocks and separate the long border section. DO NOT CUT UP THE ORIGINALS. Make copies of the originals for making and cutting out any templates.
What kind of fabric did you buy to make this pattern?
    Hope this helps

  2. I cut mine into sections so I can handle them with ease. I think they're printed on big sheets of paper because that's most economical?
As Julee said though, don't cut into the master pattern itself. Have fun! :)

  3. I know it's not fun and a bit of a pain, especially when you're ready to SEW, but I use exam table paper and an extra fine Sharpie marker to copy each block from the original pattern.

  4. Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will go ahead and cut it apart. I am afraid I will end up tearing it if I try to manage it as a single piece.

I have started collecting Kaffe fabrics and other brights. I have to make a decision on a background next. I am leaning toward a solid, but am concerned that I might get bored with it. So many decisions!

  5. Hi Dana,
I think the paper size has something to do with cost. Its probably the most economical way of using the paper.
Love to see your blocks soon. Kim McL
