Progress on block 2
Hi,
I thought I would show you my progress on block number 2.
I still love my red background, but at the same time I start hating it because I find it very hard to sew. Seems it is very coarse and hard. It was purchased at a quiltstore, so it's not that.
So I am thinking what to do. Continue? But quilting it by hand will be ??? And quilting it by machine is absolutely not my cup of tea. Yet anyhow.
And then to think that the red fabric was meant to be the backing of a very beautiful handquilted quilt to be.
Or should i just leave it be. And start another pattern of Kim's.

I am a hand quilter, too, so I sympathize with your dilemma. I think, if I was only on block two, that I would change backgrounds and save the red for a different project. Did you prewash it? sometimes that makes a softening difference. Good luck, Michele
ReplyDeleteYou do fabulous applique work! Hard dillema but I think I agree with Michele.
ReplyDeleteI agree..if you didn't prewash and the fabric is difficult to work with I'd consider changing it. Once you add batting and backing it might be a monster to hand quilt?
ReplyDeleteIf I was only a couple of blocks into the project I would change background, as well. If you stay with this one, though, I would choose a really soft batting to help with the hand-quilting...like wool, mmmmm!!!
ReplyDeleteI would change the background make a pillow from the first block
ReplyDeleteif your not happy after just 1 block don't keep going you will never be happy
just mho

I agree with everyone. Perhaps you could take a bit of leftover red and put together a "mini quilt" and test how it hand quilts--sometimes it is surprising how heavier fabrics aren't that hard to quilt, while some fine tight weave ones are a real struggle. While I love the red, if you decide to abandon it, perhaps just a pillow or a small wall quilt or table cover with 4 blocks would be a good use, and small enough to machine quilt easily.
ReplyDeleteI would change it too.. if you are this unhappy NOW.. it is not going to get any better as you go along..which means it just becomes a UFO
ReplyDeleteThanks guys. I did prewash (always do). I think I will go with Donna's good idea and try to quilt a little piece before i continue. I didn't think of that myself. Clever! And then maybe the wool batting. Now I'm even more thrilled then ever that this blog exists. And my DH already worries about my enthousiasm.;)
ReplyDeleteGosh Francoise, this is hard. How did it go with the quilting experiment? Kim McL
ReplyDeleteThese are all such good ideas. If you like the red and want to keep it, I would probably send the finished quilt to the pros and save the hand quilting for your next KML project!
ReplyDeleteWell, I know there is a post about how the quilting went, but I haven't gotten there yet, and I don't want to jump ahead. I am thankful for a place where we can share information and exchange ideas. This community has been so/sew helpful. I LOVE you all for joining in this applique journey!!!
ReplyDeleteI must say, I LOVE that red background, Francoise!!! I am hoping you continue with it!?
