Flower Pots

My Flower Pots is finally hanging on a wall.  I've quilted for 22 years, been a Kaffe Collectives enthusiast for 10. This is my very first applique quilt, not counting fused applique. ;)  It took me 4 months back in 2011.  I purchased Kim's Flower Pots as soon as it came out, desperately wanting to make it but not fused, and I was no good at and gave up, the "needle turn" method. I was getting desperate. Then I met my dear friend Anita Brady, who taught me the "The Best Press Method"; a technique using freezer paper or heatproof plastic templates, starch, and an iron to turn the edges perfectly. The next time we met, I showed up with the Flower Pots pattern and she thought I was completely nuts!  A beginner starting with such a project!!? But stubborn as I am, I dived in.  A wonderful long armer in California, JoAnn Carpenter, quilted it.  And guess what... Anita quickly became a Kaffe/Kim fan and is doing Pandemonium with me!  It's so much fun choosing fabric for Kim's patterns together.
Flower Basket Medallion is nearly done but I got side tracked with Pandemonium. I've only got small blocks left to make - but what a surprise.... now I'm desperate to start Tress of The Four Seasons...... Heeeelp! I don't have enough hours in the day!  ; )  Happy sewing!

I'd love suggestions

Ladies,
I have just completed my Flower Pots quilt top, which was done using invisible machine applique and reproduction fabrics on a linen background. I was wondering if I should leave it as is, or add a final border to this? Thoughts/comments would be so appreciated!

Flower Pots Updated

I recently finished the top panel in my Flower Pots applique. I'll admit it was fun 'fussy cutting' the birds to look like the ones in the pattern photo. For close-ups of this panel, you can go to my blog. I am now working on the fun circles in the border.

New Flower Pot quilt

Hi to all!
My newest applique project is the "Flower Pot" quilt by Kim McLean. I love the large sized applique pieces. I use the starch method of applique since I am too slow with traditional needle turn. I really like many of Kim McLean's patterns and chose this one for the lovely panels and center blocks. Plus I have to leave a little space for an amazing quilter to "play".

I've been following this blog for a couple months now and finally decided to join this friendly blog. I am pulling fabrics from my own stash and using everything in the reds/orange/aqua/blue range. This quilt is a wonderful way to use up those brights and Kaffee Fassett prints I've been collecting! I am using two different batik backgrounds which are similar, but not identical. I've been amazed at all the great fabric stashes you all have and the workmanship looks wonderful. Thanks for all your tips and techniques. I'm learning alot!

My Flower Pot Quilt

Hi Everyone!

I think I've managed to load up the photo of my flower pot quilt and have worked out how to do a post!

This is the low contrast version to my friend Sue Belzacki's quilt on the GloriousColor website.
Sue kindly gave us permission to use her quilt for the pattern packs as my quilt was really hard to see in print.

This was my first quilt using Kaffe and Amy Butler's fabrics. I had a very limited amount of brights, I think I bought a fat quater bundle of 30 mixed fabrics. Haven't found Liza at that stage!
During classes, the girls told me where to find the Kaffe ( at Liza's website and visits to Material Obsession) and my stash multipled ten fold almost overnight and have no more problems doing quilts in brights!!

I'll try and find photos of previous quilts and show you how I crossed over the the brights from the reproduction fabrics. Cheers, Kim McLean

Applique Heaven

Whenever I make a Kim McLean quilt, I always feel that I am in applique heaven! I generally use the needleturn method to applique, it is so very therapeutic to sit quietly at the end of a busy day with fabric and needle in hand (under a good light, of course!).
Kim's patterns are so satisfying with all their beautiful curves and shapes and colours. These snippets of applique are from Kim's gorgeous Flower Pots pattern that I began last year and I'm yet to finish, just the circles border to go!.
I love being able to fussy cut some of the fabrics for the applique...don't these butterflies wings look fun cut from some of Kaffe Fassett's stunning fabrics? (These butterflies were visiting my garden one fine morning!!).
Like Janet I haven't begun the Roseville Album yet, but hope to get to it very soon. Thanks to Pam for initiating this blog, the inspiration found here already is enough to get me started!
