I sent this Video link to Taryn over at Repro Quilt Lover and she has reported that it's sped up her stitching so I thought it would be a good idea to share it here in case you didn't know about it.
This blog is dedicated to applique. Glorious applique!!! The focus here will be hand applique, but there is room for machine applique too. Kim McLean is the designer whose patterns and quilts we will be working on together. Are you ready?! Let's SEW!!!

A tip for using silk thread
Silk thread is such a popular choice when it comes to applique but it's so fine that it readily slips out of the eye of the needle when stitching leading to frustration.

I've heard about this but wasn't sure how to do it...
ReplyDeleteThank so much Janet Now I Know..
cheers
Brilliant! I will try this tonight, thank you for posting here
ReplyDeleteJanet thanks so much for this great tutorial. It may be a simple act but oh so effective for those that want to use silk thread. I don`t use it all the time but some projects need it I have 2 in mind. You are awesome!
ReplyDeleteI have tried and avoided using silk thread just because of this problem. This is a big help, Janet. I will be trying silk again. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Janet! I'll have to watch this video when I'm back on my normal computer. I keep losing needles whenever I use the silk threads. Kim McL
ReplyDeletegreat idea! i do something similar .. just thread the needle and then tie a normal little knot using both threads at the eye of the needle. holds every time and never slips out.
ReplyDeleteGenius!
ReplyDeleteI heard some quilters talking about his technique but I hadn't seen it...makes sooo much sense. I'll go try using my silk threads again!
ReplyDeleteSo simple and yet so effective. Thank you Janet for posting the link.
ReplyDeleteThanks again, Janet! The silk thread makes appliue look so much better but I avoided it because of the slipping. I also forgot about the other big problem that Kim pointed out, losing the needles when you let them dangle to untwist the thread. That is downright dangerous so I am doubly appreciative of the little tutorial you've passed along to us.
ReplyDeleteThanks Janet, I bought some silk Yli thread today at our National Quilt Guild exhibition/market. I’m really curious to exerience how it works!
ReplyDeleteThanks Janet. You are a mine of useful information....this looks great....now I just have to sharpen up my eyesight or buy needles with a bigger eye!
ReplyDeleteBy the way,Taryn, I dont let my needle dangle to "untwist" the thread....every now and then I just rotate the needle with my thumb and 3rd finger anticlockwise several times to unwind it..no loss of needle to worry about.
