Block #8...done

I've gotten block #8 finished. The urn took quite a while because of the fussy reverse applique.

I placed red behind the three main flowers...and peach behind the urn. I added the circles on the urn with applique, but wish I had done them the same as the rest of the urn. The dark fabric shows through them a bit?

You may want to keep that in mind when you do your block?

I was asked how I'm getting these blocks done so fast and I'm convinced it's because of the way I prep my applique. Here's a link to a little tutorial I did when doing the Princess Feather quilt.

  3. Ann, these are just beautiful! And look so nice together. Could you give us some pointers on how you are making sure they all coordinate so nicely? It is what I struggle with most.

  4. Donna..I'm trying to have the blocks that sit across from each other (excluding the center block) mirror the color/fabric choices somewhat, although not exactly.
That's probably most obvious in the top row corner blocks? In the block I just finished, if you look closely you'll see that the peach under the urn is used under the flower in the top middle block above it, and some of the flower buds repeat the same fabrics.
I'm also trying to get at least one piece of each color in every block...like the bottom right block where I added very small blue circles to the design just so I could incorporate the blue.
For color placement within a block I try to have them form a triangle rather than a straight line or square. An example of that in this block that's most obvious is the two leaves with blue near the top of the block that form a triangle with the blue of the urn.

This seems to work for me? I need a way to help me decide what colors to use because I just can't seem to make random work? :)

  5. Can't you cut the dark fabric behind the circles away if yo think it shows through? But I don't see anything showing through.
Do you sew by hand or machine?
    Keep up the good work!

  7. Doh! I guess I could cut the fabric behind the circles away? I hadn't thought of that Francoise. That's why this blog is so nice..a sharing of information?
I sew by hand. I think the way I prep my appliques cuts down on the time quite a bit?

I keep resisting buying this pattern but I am getting weaker and weaker.

  13. Ann, the blocks are playing very well together!! They all positively sparkle, but one doesn't outshine the other -- no sibling rivalry! LOL Gorgerous, as usual! I'm clanking away on Circuit Rider so I can get crackin' on Roseville -- I don't want you to be the only non-random person here! LOL
    Blessings,

  16. Again ... wonderful Ann! I think you are being a tad too hard on yourself - let me know when it is all finished and quilted up! I really think the 9 blocks like this would make a great wall-hanging!

  17. Super fabulous Ann, it's such a pleasure to see them together to see how the colours are looking. I do much the same as you with balancing the colours so I'm glad to hear you explain that. Every time you post a new block, I feel inspired to start but I mustn't just yet.
