Leaves Quilt

Hi Everyone,
This is my second Kaffe quilt, it is drafted from from a famous 1930's quilt called " Autumn Leaves" and I think the original quilt is at the Denver Art Museum. The original had a solid yellow sashings and also the vine borders are tighter and it had prairie points which are cute. This was a fun quilt to do with the Kaffe fabrics. Sorry, no pattern for this one ! Cheers, Kim McLean

  3. I just love this quilt , what a great way to use up those little pieces of fabrics we have left over from the Roseville Album when we are done....maybe someday it could be a pattern?
    hint, hint, hint!!!!
My favorite season is the fall , I just love the changing of the leaves and the colors are always amazing to me. This quilt just reminds me of the fall season in New England.

  8. I love this quilt!!! I remember seeing a photo of the original. How long did it take you to do all that applique' on the leaves? I think after sewing the same shape that long, I'd need a good therapist!

  10. Thank you girls, it was a fun quilt to do. No, didn't count the leaves, that might have put me off! I don't think it took that long, cutting up the leaves did take a long time but in the end I stacked up a lot of layers and use the cutter.
I think I'll get clobbered over the copyright thing if I do a pattern!

  13. "Autumn Leaves" is pictured in Great American Quilts 1992, edited and compiled by Sandra O'Brien. The quilt is credited to Anna Hartzell, 1934-1935. The one in the book doesn't have nearly as many leaves as yours. And your fabrics give it even more splendor than the original. I've always wanted to do this one...now I have an idea of what fabrics to use!!!

  15. Beautiful quilt. I love the use of the big floral as borders. This fabric is so easy to just fussy cut and use it up. It's nice to see the whole pattern at once.

  18. Hi Girls,

The quilt is 82" x 88" which is a bit more rectangular than the original. The border fabric is Kaffe's Kimono in aqua, love that fabric. I've got a skirt made in that fabric and people always asked me where I got it from. ( except quilters) The background is creamy white solid.
I can scan the photo in the book and post - but is this a violation of the copyright? The book is called " American Patchwork Quilt - The Denver Art Museum" , it is a Japanese publication 1986. The maker is Charlotte Jane Whitehill,1934. Size: 91.5" x 87". It also said that there was an exact copy at the Chicago World's fair in 1893 which had pink instead of yellow borders. So there must have been a number of copies around, I'm not surprised as it is a gorgeous quilt!
The book also has a number of photos of Charlotte's quilts, they are all lovely. I believe Rose Kretsinger was her mentor. Rose's quilts were photographed in another book but I can't remember the title. Rose Kretsinger is one of my favourite quilter, she did the " Paradise Garden" quilt. One day I might draft my version of Paradise Garden. It will probably a bit more in the naive with chubby figures. Now, that's an idea germinating... Cheers, Kim McL
